Some Truth About Hypnosis
Hypnotherapy is a sort of healing procedure wherein people change their habits, get inspired, reduce their stress and try to live more healthy lives.
Hypnosis can be put into use to improve one's general well being and functioning so that one feels better both physically and mentally. The fact is that during hypnotic trance, no one can make you act against your own moral and social values and acceptable patterns of behavior. That is, unless you want to, you cannot be manipulated against your will! It is important to understand that even during deep trance, you remain conscious and under control. The hypnotist only makes you act according to the dictum of your own conscious and subconscious. You can terminate the trance state any time you feel like. Even if you are left in trance state by the hypnotist or a hypnotic tape, you would either return to normal wakeful state on your own, or enter a natural sleep and wake up feeling fresh and energetic. Posthypnotic Suggestion
Posthypnotic suggestions are powerful tools for changing behavior or for achieving long sought after goals. A quick definition of a posthypnotic suggestion is an idea that was implanted in the subconscious mind during hypnosis or an altered state of consciousness. The purpose of a posthypnotic suggestion is for the person to take a desired action in certain situations.
Posthypnotic suggestions need to be paired with posthypnotic cues to be effective. Cues are also known as triggers that allow the person's subconscious mind to remember the course of action that needs to be taken. Posthypnotic cues could be a word, image or an event.
To better put these terms in a practical perspective, if a person wants to lose weight a posthypnotic suggestion would be to desire lower calorie foods. The posthypnotic cue may be opening the refrigerator door. When the person is hungry and checks what is inside the refrigerator, there is suddenly a desire for healthy and low calorie food. That's the posthypnotic suggestion.
To make posthypnotic suggestions most effective, they need to specifically address a situation or goal. The accompanying cue must also be relevant to the posthypnotic suggestion. In the previous example, the cue was opening the refrigerator door, which is an act clearly associated with food and eating.
Many times posthypnotic suggestions involve allowing the subject to return to an altered or heightened state of consciousness at will. A person may want to handle stress better and therefore seeks to regain a firm measure of peace by slipping into a trance-like state that makes them relaxed. Patients with chronic pain may even eliminate their discomfort by dealing with it through a posthypnotic suggestion.
Interestingly, the person who carries out the posthypnotic suggestion won't have a valid reason for performing that action. That's because they will be acting outside of their conscious awareness. Usually, a posthypnotic suggestion carries additional instructions about forgetting the hypnosis session. The person will perform the desired action in a similar trance-like state, almost like amnesia.
This can be better understood if you have ever done something "out of habit". Did you ever rearrange the items in your kitchen cabinets? Perhaps one day you opened the cabinet to take out your favorite coffee mug only to remember that it was moved to a different location? Did you make this "mistake" several times before finally getting it right?
Activities we do automatically are similar to posthypnotic suggestions. They have been ingrained into our subconscious mind so that we don't even think about them, and merely do them. A posthypnotic suggestion works the same way. Except that the suggestion is deliberately planted in the subconscious mind with a goal of creating a desired response.
Although posthypnotic suggestions can be very effective, if the subject repeatedly rejects the thought, eventually the suggestion will leave the subconscious mind. Therefore, to make this hypnotic method successful, the posthypnotic suggestion must be something the person wants to achieve.
The mind is truly amazing and the ability to alter behavior for the good is an exciting and wonderful possibility.

Basic Hypnosis Techniques
Hypnotists use many different methods and techniques to successfully hypnotize their subjects. Below we look at a few basic hypnotism techniques.
1) Intense Focus
You will be familiar with this one. The hypnotist holds an object which he tells his subject to gaze deeply into. For sure you have seen the pocket watch on a chain, or a pendulum, which the hypnotist swings slowly in front of the subject. Another popular object for this is a spinning disk with a spiral pattern on it. This can cause the subject to feel dizzy, disoriented, and drawn into the disk. Still other hypnotists will use a candle, telling their subject to look deeply into the flame. With any of these tools the idea is to have the subject so focused on the object that they will eventually tune out everything around them. Once they are in this state the hypnotist will begin to speak to their subject in a soft, relaxed, soothing monotone voice setting the mood for relaxation and preparing the subject for suggestions.
2) Sir Yes Sir
This technique is often employed by stage hypnotists. It is popular because of its high success rate and dramatic effect. With this method the hypnotist comes at the subject sudden and forceful commands. To be effective the commands must be forceful enough to totally convince the subject he is one hundred percent under the control of the hypnotist. This will allow him to readily introduce the desired suggestions.
3) Take It Easy
The goal here is to relax the subject totally. She will feel so comfortable and relaxed that her natural defences will be lowered. This will make her very receptive to suggestions from the hypnotist. Psychiatrists will often employ this method especially with patients in a state of extreme stress, or anxiety. When used as part of a hypnotherapeutic program, this technique will give the subject a feeling of well being which is always beneficial to the patient. Another name for this technique is "progressive relaxation and imagery". This method can be used in meditation and self-hypnosis as well. Soft lighting or candles, relaxing music can also be utilized to further promote a relaxed feeling.
These are just a few of the many techniques used in hypnosis, we will study this further as we go.

Age and Past Life Regression
I am sure you are familiar with the saying "If we do not remember our history and it's mistakes we are condemned to repeat them." It is true that whatever problems and trouble you have, the skills and knowledge you possess, and the person you are now most definitely have their roots in your past.
In age regression the hypnotist will bring you back to in time to a specific time in your life, for example to pre-school or first grade. The hypnotherapists use of this suggestion will trigger you to regress to this point in your life and you will seem to be living out significant incidents which took place during this time. Seeing as you are re-living your past you will begin to think, talk, and act as if you were truly at this age, and time in your life. You and your hypnotist can then determine whether an incident during this period is the root cause of the problem or condition you are experiencing in the present time. Through the use of age regression hypnosis and reliving your past you may be able to uncover some vital information which you have suppressed, perhaps allowing you to better deal with the present.
Let us take the theory a step further. There have been claims that regression can be taken deeper, much deeper, as far back as that the subject experiences there life when they were still in their mothers womb. Scientists are highly sceptical of this claim as they say that the brain has not developed sufficiently to retain memories, or have highly organized cognizant thought. And even more controversial and contentious, especially as this is getting into religion is past life regression. Although greeted with scepticism and ridicule, there have been thousands of documented cases of people going back and experiencing past lives. These people are convinced that they found accurate, incontrovertible connections between their past and present lives. As is the case in age regression, it is thought that finding out about what you were and what occurred in your past life may allow you to understand the root cause of the problem you are experiencing in the present and thus be able to cure it. An example would be someone who is terrified of heights discovers that they fell to their death in a past life.
