You have a head full of questions about your future.. Everything up ahead seems cloudy and even your Magic 8-ball is vague in response to queries concerning what the future has in store for you. Despite all the doubts, insecurities, and uncertainties floating through your mind right now, there is one question that seems to be taking center stage: ‘Is it too late to save my marriage?’
That’s the crux of it all when you get down to it. You may be living together; but feel miles apart. You may be separated so you can try to see where you stand emotionally. Or, you may already be moving through divorce procedures. You could even be already divorced by law but still married in your mind. The problem is, you want to make your marriage work and your spouse (or former spouse as the case may be) doesn’t seem inclined to do so.
Is it too late?
Even after you’ve gotten divorced, it isn’t too late to save your marriage. Couples reconcile – even after ripping each other to shreds through the process of a divorce – all the time. There are many people who have remarried after a divorce. Some divorces lasted months before the couples reconciled. Some lasted years.
It happens in real life and not just on television. Sometimes, it takes that little bit of emotional distance in order to see how much you really mean to each other. More importantly, it takes a little sense of loss in order to understand just how much you’re willing to compromise to make your marriage work.
The real question you need to ask yourself is HOW to make your marriage work when it seems to be on a downhill slide (or to get a second chance after the fact).
Do you really WANT to save your marriage?
This is the second question you need to ask. While the knee-jerk first reaction should be something along the lines of: ‘Of course I want to save my marriage!’ It’s a good idea to explore just how true that claim is.
These are a few of the questions you should consider before you go through the process you believe is necessary to save your marriage or get your ex back.
Do you believe your marriage has had more good times than bad over the years? This one is one that should be simple to answer. If it isn’t a resounding yes that requires little thought then perhaps it’s time to reconsider your reconciliation ideas.
Do you believe your marriage is worth saving as it was? You see, some people have an idea of what their marriage is (or should be) that doesn’t even closely resemble the reality of their marriages. It’s time to get down to the nuts and bolts of your marriage, figure out what it is, and decide if the reality is what you’re fighting to hold onto or if you’re struggling to save an ideal you’ve never achieved.
Do you love your spouse and does your spouse love you in return? Marriage doesn’t have to be a 50-50 split in the love department. There’s no real way to quantify that. However, if you’re the one who is showing all the signs of love while your spouse is accepting your love by offering little in return then it’s an extremely uneven mix. That needs to be explored before you try to get your ex back and/or save your marriage.
If you’ve decided that your marriage is one that is well worth saving then now is the time to get to work. You’re going to have to do something a little unconventional to make it happen though.
